I hope to see as many of you as can come. I will have the coffee on, so brave the weather and come out.

Co-housing? Have you heard of it? What is it? How does it work? Could it be for you? Cohousing is a type of collaborative housing in which residents actively participate in the design and operation of their own neighborhoods. Cohousing residents are consciously committed to living as a community. The physical design encourages both social contact and individual space. Private homes contain all the features of conventional homes, but residents also have access to extensive common facilities such as open space, courtyards, a playground and a common house. Find out about cohousing coming to Omaha at the next meeting of the New Urbanism and Sustainable Development meetup group. Check out these links to get briefed before the meeting: Cohousing.org Cohousing article from Wikipedia We'll meet this Satruday, September 12 from 3-4 pm in the Creighton Center for Service and Justice (Harper Center, 602 N. 20th St.) We hope to see you there!

One "Maybe" RSVP two days before the meeting indicates busy summer schedules, so I have can cancelled the July Meetup. Let's try again the third Thursday of August. I hope to see some of you then. If you have suggestions for more preferred meeting times and places, please submit your ideas. Meeting times and places are flexible and variable, so offer your comments in that regard. If you have a topic that interests you, suggest that too. The same goes for a guest speaker you can invite, a site you want to visit or a program that you yourself want to present to the group. Programming needs to be relevant, varied and interesting, so contribute your resources and ideas. See you in August. Herb

We are changing our meetup arrangements somewhat in an effort to accomodate the schedules of more members. Digital format PHOTOS NEEDED! We've been working on giving a local face to a presentation that could be shared with a variety of groups. If you have easily identifiable "local" photos that you'd like to submit for possible inclusion, please contact Machell Owens at mowens@usa.com. Photos of people/families enjoying themselves in the area are needed, as are photos of both "best loved" and "worst of" locations. If it's a local shot, it could be included! The presentation will be available for viewing and distribution at the May meetup. Would you be interested in giving this presentation to other groups? Then come to the May meetup and share your thoughts and ideas with us, and get some great suggestions on how to customize the presentation even more! If you have experience giving this sort of presentation, come and share your tips and advice!

The February meeting will be Saturday, February 14th, at 10:30 am in the Meeting Room of the Abrahamson Branch Library. Yes, this is Valentine's day, and we have a very SPECIAL program in store! FREE RANGE CHILDREN?! Question: What do free range children, dedication to conservation and St. Valentine’s Day all have in common? Answer: Green Hearts Institute for Nature in Children! SURPRISE! Ken Finch of Green Hearts INC. has graciously agreed to be our guest speaker at the next Omaha New Urbanism and Sustainable Development Group Meeting! He will illustrate the importance of planning green spaces, which he refers to as "Naturehoods" into our new developments. Green Hearts was founded as one of the country's first conservation organizations entirely dedicated to restoring and strengthening the emotional bonds between children and nature. During his long career, Ken Finch has been a front-line educator in environmental education programs, worked as a senior manager in two children's museums, led two of the country's largest nature centers, and served as a Vice President of the National Audubon Society. Ken holds a master's degree in environmental education, and is a published writer and an accomplished speaker. Ken will be discussing children’s play in nature, and while the subject and Ken’s commitment to it are both serious, his presentation style isn’t. Come and see why the disappearance of “free range children” is something we need to change! For more on Green Hearts, www.greenheartsinc.o rg There are no limitations on attendance for this meeting, as the room will accomodate up to 90 occupants, and the public will be encouraged to attend this presentation! Bring guests- if you have children, plan to have children someday, or simply care about how we'll encourage future generations to value and appreciate our green spaces, YOU DON'T WANT TO MISS THIS!!!
